Natural Tick Collars use EM Technology. EM® is an acronym for Effective Microorganisms®, a brand name referring to a family of microbial-based products using a technology developed by Japanese scientist Dr. Teruo Higa. These microorganisms are baked into special clay pipes which use beneficial microbes, creating a synergy among microorganisms and larger forms of life including insects and worms, pets and livestock, and people.
How do EM® Collars work?
The primary way the collars work is by far infrared (FIR) waves. EM® Ceramics emit far infrared waves, the longest rays in the light spectrum. This wavelength is highly compatible with human tissue. The body can absorb them easily at depths up to 3 inches, where they can do lots of good work. Far Infrared waves remove blood cell clusters and this improves blood circulation. Because the infrared rays penetrate the tissue, they work deep into body tissue, not just on the surface of the skin, generating a warming effect by activating cells. NASA uses Far Infrared wave technology in the space suits of their astronauts. Try this chemical-free, alternative to enhance your blood flow. Increased blood circulation removes toxins from muscles and internal organs, lowers blood pressure, and improves overall body function. Good for people and pets.
This improved and balanced environment in your dog (created by EM) can help keep ticks from attaching to your dog. It is thought that ticks dislike the changed environment created by the collar.
A secondary way in which these collars work is the actual microorganisms themselves. EM™ ceramics are made by fermenting a special clay with approximately 80 different microorganisms (EM) and then baked. The pipes are baked at 1200 C, during the baking process the structure of the clay changes, trapping the EM within its matrix. As a result, these EM pipes exert their influence purely through their physical properties and remain effective for a long time.
An EM™ Tick Collar can be as effective as any tick repellent found on the market, but without side effects. That makes it also safe for dogs with allergies and sensitivities, and breeding dogs and litters. However, there is no 100% guarantee EM collars nor any other tick product will keep ticks off of our furry friends!
Nevertheless, the best prevention is to avoid known tick areas, and checking your dog AND yourself for ticks after every nature walk. EM ceramics are safe if you have children in your household. (although, don't let the kids nor dogs eat them!)
In our own and other customers experience, the EM collars do not work as well anymore after about 10-12 months. Therefore it is recommended to renew your EM collar every year.
external information on the use and efficacy of far infrared (fir) and effective microorganisms
The efficacy of Effective Mircoorganisms is not only based on anecdotal evidence. I have researched studies on the use of FIR and EM technology in well being and parasite control among humans and animals, and there have been genuine documented results which support the efficacy of this method of control. Note how results improve with time, the effect is not always immediate.
New independent research has also been done into the effect changing the levels of microoragnisms does to the 'microbiome' - the microorganisms in a particular environment (including the body or a part of the body). A conclusion from a paper researching the human microbiome stated: "Manipulation of the microbiota as a therapeutic tool is a rapidly advancing field in microbiome research" (Amon P, Sanderson I. What is the microbiome? Archives of Disease in Childhood - Education and Practice 2017;102:257-260)
In 2018, a study was published on recent insights in the tick microbiome. Whilst such research is in very preliminary stages, in the conclusion it was noted: "an understanding of the factors that influence the microbiome, and the role of the microbiome, provides new avenues to be explored for TBD control. Most tick and TBD control strategies focus on the use of acaricides and vaccines; however, tick populations can become resistant to chemical acaricides, and vaccine development takes an average of ten years. Strategies could be developed to manipulate the tick microbiome to decrease the vectorial capacity of ticks by hindering pathogen acquisition, development, and horizontal and vertical transmission, which could have a long-term impact on TBP transmission and could ultimately reduce morbidity and mortality caused by TBDs. In the field of human microbiome research, investigations of metabolic, signaling and immune interactions between gut microbes and host physiology have led to the concept of therapeutic microbial manipulation to treat or prevent diseases." (Greay et al. Recent insights into the tick mircobiome gained by next-generation sequencing; Parasites & Vectors (2018))
Evidently, though it hasn't yet been proven how microorganisims can be used to alter the behaviour of parasites, it is widely accepted that by manipulating the balance within an environment, it can dramatically impact this.
We have seen the results ourselves, backed up by field trials such as the one cited above, and know many others who have had great results using EM technology. Of course as this is a natural product, we cannot guarantee that it will work for your pet in the same way that it has for others, but you can be confident that it is beneficial for wellness and health as a whole.
